Fuel Scarcity Trails Up, Oil Workers Threaten To Embark On A Strike Tomorrow
It appears another episode of petroleum scarcity is
about to hit Nigerians as members of the Petroleum
and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association [PENGASSAN]
and their counterparts in the National Union of
Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers [NUPENG], are set
to begin a nationwide strike starting from tomorrow Monday December 15th.
According to Premium Times, the oil workers are heading for a strike action due to unresolved labor
issues with the federal government, underfunding of
the Petroleum Training Institute in Delta state as well
as the yet to be passed Petroleum Industry Bill PIB. "We (the oil workers) have sufficient reasons,
based on information available to us, to believe
that the law makers are not prepared to pass
the law, even as the state of the country's
petroleum industry has continued to deteriorate
as a result of the absence of a regulatory and legal framework for the industry," an official
of the petroleum workers body said. The oil workers are said to also be aggrieved over
the decision of the management of Total Nigeria to
sack the PENGASSAN zonal Secretary in Port Harcourt
as well as the lack of promotion for workers of the
Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF). 0

Before his death, teen felt comfortable in Kabul
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A teenager described in a blog
post from his home in Afghanistan how he felt more
comfortable there than in his native South Africa,
which has a high crime rate. Just weeks later, he was
killed by Taliban gunmen who stormed a Kabul aid
office where his family lived. "If you're going to be constantly paranoid that you're
going to die if you go out, then there's no point in
being here," the 17-year-old Jean-Pierre Groenewald
had written. He was buried Friday in South Africa
along with his father and sister. The three were fatally
shot in the Nov. 29 attack in the Afghan capital, according to a family member in South Africa. The Nov. 1 blog post, which was sent to The
Associated Press by a Groenewald family
representative, sheds light on the unusual life of a
young foreigner who had lived for more than a
decade in a country beset by conflict. Many foreigners, including diplomats and contractors,
maneuver with security entourages around Kabul, a
frequent site of suicide bombings and other attacks.
But Jean-Pierre Groenewald said he had been riding
his bicycle alone to visit friends there since he was 13,
though he was too scared to do the same thing during trips to South Africa. "My grandparents always made this huge thing of the
crime rate in Pretoria, and I do know that facts
support their warnings," Groenewald wrote. "Here there's only the threat of bombs and stuff like
that. No big deal right? Actually it is a big deal but
since I grew up here I'm not really phased by those
threats anymore," he said. The teenager said he learned to take security
concerns in stride from his father Werner, who the
son said had not followed the advice of security
advisers from other organizations "to go on lockdown
every time there's a minor threat." Werner Groenewald, 46, worked as a pastor at a
church in Pretoria, South Africa's capital, before
leaving with his family for Afghanistan in 2002. There,
he led the local activities of Partnership in Academics
and Development, an aid group with offices in
Redlands, California. The family lived in floors above the group's Kabul office. A funeral service was held on Friday for Groenewald,
his son and 15-year-old daughter, Rode, at the same
church where the father had worked. In a symbolic
gesture, a pastor lit three candles — one for each
slain family member — and blew them out. Groenewald's widow, Hannelie, was composed during
the ceremony. She said in a statement that she had no
regrets about living in Afghanistan and raising her
children there, saying it was God's calling. Hannelie Groenewald, a doctor, said an attack had
been expected in Kabul on Nov. 29, and that she had
been called to a meeting at a hotel to serve as a
member of a medical team in the event it happened. "Little did I know that the attack would take place a
few hours later at my house, killing everybody I
dearly loved," she said. In a separate funeral service Friday, family and
friends paid tribute to Pierre Korkie, a teacher who
was killed in Yemen on Dec. 6 during a U.S. raid on al-
Qaida militants who were holding Korkie and
American hostage Luke Somers. American officials
say militants killed both men. Uniformed students from a South African school
where Korkie had taught escorted his flower-laden
casket in the city of Bloemfontein. In his last blog post, Jean-Pierre Groenewald also
talked about school, new friends, his Christian faith,
travel to China and other countries and the "pros and
cons" of life in Afghanistan. "All in all, I love this country. I love the life I'm living. I
wouldn't change any of it, even if I could," he wrote. At the end, he said: "That's all I have to say right now.
Maybe I'll be inspired to write another post on life
here, but that's for another day."

Russia Threatens U.S Over New Law Sanctioning Over Ukraine
Moscow (AFP) - Russia responded angrily on Saturday
to news that US senators had passed a bill calling for
fresh sanctions against Moscow and the supply of
lethal military aid to Ukraine. "Undoubtedly, we will not be able to leave this without
a response," deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov
told Interfax news agency ahead of a meeting
between the Russian and US foreign ministers. The Senate bill -- dubbed the Ukraine Freedom Support
Act -- must still be approved by the White House,
which has so far been reluctant to provide direct
military assistance to Ukraine for fear of being drawn
into a proxy war with Russia. Ryabkov blamed "anti-Russian moods" in the United
States for the bill passed on Friday, which calls for
additional sanctions against Russia and the delivery of
up to $350 million (280 million euros') worth of US
military hardware to Ukraine. The eight-month conflict between government forces
and pro-Russian separatists has left at least 4,634
dead and 10,243 wounded, while displacing more
than 1.1 million people, according to new figures
released by the United Nations. It also threatens fresh sanctions against Russia,
whose economy is crumbling under previous rounds
of Western sanctions and a collapse in oil prices. Kiev lawmakers have hailed the bill as a "historic
decision". They have long been pressing the West to
provide military support to their beleaguered army,
but have so far received only non-lethal equipment. The controversy is likely to come up Sunday when US
Secretary of State John Kerry meets Russian Foreign
Minister Sergei Lavrov in Rome. However, Ryabkov
said that "the main focus at their 17th meeting this
year would be on the Middle East." A State Department official confirmed to AFP that the
meeting would be Sunday after Washington had
initially said it was set for Monday. - Tentative ceasefire - A tentative ceasefire has been in place along the
frontline in eastern Ukraine since Tuesday, and
fighting has been greatly reduced despite occasional
breaches. The Ukrainian army on Saturday reported 11 attacks
on its positions in the past 24 hours but no one was
killed or wounded. It also said a drone was spotted over Mariupol, the
last major town in the southeast under its control. Ukraine has been worried for months that the Russia-
backed separatists will launch an offensive on
Mariupol in a bid to build a corridor between the
Russian border and the Crimean peninsula, a Ukrainian
region which was annexed by Moscow in March. Around the airport in Donetsk -- site of some of the
fiercest fighting in recent months -- "the night was
rough", Maxim, a volunteer soldier with the right-wing
Pravy Sektor group, told AFP. "Snipers fired on us and explosions were coming from
the airport. But everything is calm this morning," he
said. Ukraine announced Friday it would bolster its army
next year by conscripting another 40,000 soldiers,
training 10,500 new professionals and doubling its
military budget. - 'Provocative farce' - Meanwhile in Kiev, efforts by the artistic community to
rise above the international conflict fell flat when the
ballet school rejected charity money raised by
Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, it emerged Saturday. Prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova organised a
special gala at the Bolshoi last week to raise money
for her old school in Kiev, but the cash was turned
down when the Kiev State Ballet School learned that
she had supported Russia's annexation of Crimea. "The Ukrainian artists who participated in the concert
appear to not be aware that the Russian dancer S.
Zakharova signed a letter supporting the politics of
(Russian President) Vladimir Putin in Crimea," wrote
the school's director Ivan Doroshenko in a letter
published on the culture ministry's website. "Otherwise, they would never have agreed to take
part in this provocative farce." The Crimean peninsula was annexed by Russia in
March after a referendum that was heavily criticised
by Ukraine and the West.

Police Choke Dave Chappelle On His Movie Set
During a Thursday night show at the Saenger Theatre
in New Orleans, comedian Dave Chappelle reportedly
told a crowd that he was once choked by a police
officer while filming a movie in the city. The act wasn't caught on tape, but Jarvis DeBerry of The Times-Picayune retold the story: Chappelle said he was working on his "first movie"
here in New Orleans. He was playing a mugger, he
said. He was dressed for the part. The movie set was
surrounded with police tape. He ducked under it. Then
a police officer set upon him and immediately started
choking him. According to the Internet Movie Database, Dave
Chappelle played a mugger in the 1993 movie
"Undercover Blues," part of which was filmed in New
Orleans. The movie was shot in the summer of 1992.
Filming ended the same month Chappelle celebrated
his 19th birthday. One of the women working on the set saw what was
happening to the actor and yelled to the police officer
that he belonged on the set. After relaxing his hold on
Chappelle's neck the police officer said, according to
the comedian, "Well why didn't he say something?" The weirdest thing about being a black man being
choked by the police, Chappelle said, is that you don't
even wonder why it's happening. You just think, he
said, "OK, here we go." Racial disparities in the criminal justice system and police use of force have been in the news following a
string of police killings of unarmed black men. The use of chokeholds in particular received national
media attention after New York City Police officer Daniel Pantaleo was caught on video putting unarmed Eric Garner into a chokehold that led to Garner's death — supposedly for resisting arrest after officers
stopped him for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes. A
grand jury on December 3 decided not to indict
Pantaleo for Garner's death.

Jeremih Got Arrested For Fighting In A Plane
R&B singer Jeremih was arrested Friday at Newark
Airport ... after trying to strong-arm a friend onto a
plane.Port Authority officials tell us Jeremih was
travelling with members of his band on US Air.
Apparently they were late, because Jeremih barely
made it onto the jetway that leads to the plane but several members of his band were left high and dry
when the door closed.Jeremih and a friend somehow
pried open the jetway door and at least one of the
wayward guys scurried through. Here's the thing.
That's illegal. So Jeremih and his friend were yanked
off the plane, arrested and charged with obstruction and disorderly conduct. The guy who tried sneaking
onto the plane was charged with defiant trespass. Not
the first time he's caused a Fuddruckus in public.

Popular comedian Mc Abbey has slammed the All
Progressive Party's presidential candidate,
Muhammad Buari for declaring his assets on
facebook. General Buari had earlier posted this message on
facebook "I have at least one million naira in my
bank, having paid N5.5 million to pick my form from
my party. I have around 150 cattle because I am
never comfortable without cows. I have a house
each in Kaduna, Kano, and Daura which I borrowed money to build. I never had a foreign account since I
finished my courses in the USA, India and the UK. I
never owned any property outside Nigeria. Never"
Reacting however, comedian Mc Abbey wrote: 'You have at least one million in your account and
so what, are you trying to say that people that have
much more got it through corrupt practices?if been a
retired General for many years and you use this to
brag then I'll question your economic growth

stop all this sentimental and sympathetic way of
seeking the votes of Nigerians, please tell us your

Musiliu Obanikoro Drives Party to Court In The Primary Election
Immediate past Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu
Obanikoro has sued PDP for 'manipulating' it's
gubernatorial primaries which took place on Monday
in Lagos, with Jimi Agbaje emerging the winner.
According to him, Chief Bode George and Ogunlewe
manipulated the results and after petitioning the party nothing was done about it, which made him
ahead for a Federal High court in Abuja. "We must stand by the truth and the truth is that
last Monday's primary must be cancelled and re-
conducted. "We turned in our petition on Tuesday, thinking that
on Thursday, the party would reply according to its
guidelines but it has not responded as we speak. "When I noticed that the party did not respond, we
went to a Federal High Court and sued the party. "I stand for a greater Lagos and anything that will
derail that journey will be fought with every drop of
my blood," he said. Describing chief Bode George and Ogunlewe he said;
"Chief Olabode George thinks that he could just bark
and people like us would sit down but I think by now,
he would have got the message and we will stand
shoulder to shoulder. "This is not about age because if you want to be
respected, you must respect yourself. "We told him at the beginning that if he wants to be
the unifier and be an umpire, he has to be above
board but he and Ogunlewe did not do that, they
became the Director-General and Deputy Director-
General of Agbaje Campaign Organisation."
